MOSAIC ARTWORK FOR ARCHITECTURAL SURFACES

GEORGE FISHMAN - PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

MOSAIC ARTIST, (Miami, FL. 1986-Present). Design and execute mosaic murals and sculptural mosaics for municipal, hospitality, religious and residential spaces. Help clients identify projects' thematic and functional requirements; recommend appropriate materials and styles for site-specific artworks and architectural features. Formats include floor inserts, wall niches, columns and fountains. Individual projects up to 2400 square feet. Collaborate with other fabricators (Reptile Designs, Mosaicist, Inc.) for larger projects.

Contributor to various publications and conferences.

SELECTED PROJECT PROFILES

1. Maryland-National Park & Planning Commission - Silver Spring, MD; 1990. Commission awarded through national RFP. Design process involved informal interviews & photography of park patrons; research and sketches of individuals and their religious/cultural ancestor figures; preparation of maquette. Fabrication of mosaic “barber pole” of 28 portraits was done in Miami studio. Engineering, transport and installation were coordinated with subcontractors and representatives of Commission. 2. Royal Caribbean International; 1995-2004. Miami and offshore shipyards. Various commissions awarded in coordination with art dealer, cruise line and interior design representatives who specified general topics and fabrication specs.  Developed imagery through combination of library/internet research, field sketches and photography for 46 pictorial panels and five medallions. Collaborated with Ralph Young, who created 30 architectural stone frames. Contact: Art Consultant, Joan Blackman – Miami, FL.

3. Saint Therese Parish Church – Collinsville, OK; 2000. Developed specific portrait design through extended process of review and revision, using numerous photographic references supplied by Msgr. Patrick Brankin. Executed mosaic panel, crated and shipped for installation in new basilica. Contact: Supervising Priest Msgr. Patrick Brankin – Tulsa, OK.

4. Temple Judea – Palm Beach Gardens, FL; 2006. Collaborated with Rabbi Joel Levine and Interior Designer, Denise Meyer in designing a pair of panels for the entryway of the newly remodeled temple. Executed designs in traditional glass smalti and split-faced stone. The artwork was panel mounted and installed in decorative stucco niches. 5.  First City Bank, Fort Walton Beach, FL; 2007. Collaborated with art consultant, Novus, Inc. of Atlanta, to develop site-specific imagery for a new bank building. Designed and fabricated mosaic artwork for a mural that incorporates regional topography, flora and fauna. Contact: Art Consultancy - Novus Inc. – Atlanta, GA. 

6. Fifth & Alton, Miami Beach, FL; 2009. Collaborated with design firm, Tom Graboski Associates and Mosaicist, Inc. to fabricate and install TGA’s graphic design as two commercial glass mosaic murals of approximately 1200 sq. ft. each on new shopping center facades. Contact: Berkowitz Development Group – Miami, FL

7. Hotel Penaga  - Georgetown, Malaysia –  2010 The SHYNESS OF TREES resulted from an intensive, month-long artistic collaboration during the height of the hotel's re-construction. Australian artists Helen Bodycomb, Dominic Johns and Glenn Romanis were co-designer/fabricators under sponsorship from hotel owners and arts supporters, Angela Hijjas and Hijjas Kasturi. The wall and floor-mounted artwork resulting from this collaboration incorporates elements of local history, an evocation of the rainforest canopy and an engagement with the architectural features of the site.
